Diamond White Teases Memoir on The Wayne Ayers Podcast: “I Was on the Phone With Bobby Brown Yesterday”

Singer and actor Diamond White says her life has gotten so unbelievable that the book she plans to write about it may have to be published as fiction.

White, 27, discussed the idea along with a new album, her move into producing, her mental health and an upcoming music video during episode 141 of “The Wayne Ayers Podcast.” Her longtime friend, singer Willie Jones, joined the video call partway through.

“The life that I’m living is so fantastic and so full of life and joy that I am flabbergasted at the things that come out of my mouth,” White said. “I was on the phone with Bobby Brown yesterday.”

White said the book would be called “I Cannot Wait to Tell a Lie.”

“I feel like I have to make it fiction because nobody’s going to believe it,” she said. She added that it’s still only a concept: “If an idea like sticks in your head, you got to do it.”

‘I produced it myself’

White said her next project is an 11 song album that marks her debut as a producer. She played Ayers a track called “Sweet Spot.”

“And the kicker is I produced it myself,” White said. “If I had a mic, I would drop that.”

Ayers said he liked the flow and the beat. White said the song may not be released.

“That was just kind of something I did for fun. I don’t even know if I’m dropping that or not,” she said. She called it “Willie’s exit song,” saying Jones tells her he won’t leave until she plays it.

She also shared her next single, “Nissan.”

“Unfortunately, it’s impossible for me not to not make a hit,” White said.

The album’s final song, “Love, Love, Love,” was inspired by the Beatles and made with a collaborator she identified as Gage. White said she has “like five projects coming out,” including one made entirely by herself called “Cut.” She said she designed a sigil of that word and had it tattooed on her neck.

“This album is not only my producer debut and then the next one is fully just me,” she said.

White said she recorded her song “Summerland” in a closet in her apartment, which she has converted into two home studios. She has worked in studios with James Fauntleroy and Raphael Saadiq and said that inspired her.

“I can’t function if I don’t create,” she said. “If I can’t find someone to do it, then I’ll just do it myself. It’s very women in STEM.”

Asked about album length, White said “11 is a good number,” adding that only a few artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Eminem and Big Sean, can get away with much longer releases.

“The kids these days, they be watching a video for 2.5 seconds,” she said. “These kids are drinking different milk.”

A ‘Crash Out’ video and a family fight

White said the music video for “Crash Out” was set for release Friday and that the woman in it is her cousin. She said the two had a physical altercation about three weeks earlier.

“She beat me up and I’m still keeping her in the video,” White said.

She said she plans to tell the full story on TikTok. White said the cousin goes by “Ladybug,” and that she now wants to cover a ladybug tattoo on her palm.

White said she does not usually promote her work.

“How the [expletive] did ‘Summerland’ hit five million and I did not promote that?” she said.

She said director Qataro has shot every one of her videos “since day one” and noted that she is an independent artist.

Despite the song’s title, White said, “I don’t crash out. I crash in.”

Mental health and representation

White, who said she is autistic, spoke about therapy and her family history.

“I just went to therapy. I care about my mental health,” she said. “I’m an advocate for mental health.”

“Coming from a Black family and not knowing the roots, I broke a chain,” White said. “I would like to have my children be aware of who they are and where they come from.”

She said fame still doesn’t feel real to her.

“Every day I wake up and I realize that I’m a celebrity. But then I’m like, I’m just Diamond,” she said. “My family still yells at me. Like I’m still that little girl in that burnt down house.”

White said she was homeschooled and attended only first grade and four days of fourth grade.

“I got to have a locker for four days,” she said. “I’ve never been to a wedding, but I’ve been married like three times,” she added, referring to on screen roles.

She said she is uneasy around new people, which is why she has not started a book club.

“People scare me,” White said. “I’m weird. Like I stim a lot.”

Ayers told her he thought she would do well in one. “That made my day,” she said.

Languages, tour plans and ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’

White said she is learning Spanish and a little Russian ahead of an upcoming tour.

“Because I am a Black woman in America, I think it’s important that people respect culture,” she said. “When you go somewhere, you got to go somewhere and respect it.”

Asked where the tour would go, she said, “Honestly, anywhere that would have me.”

“Singing was my first, it is my first love,” she said. “I want my shows to be very, very, very, very intimate until we get to them stadiums ’cause we going to be in them stadiums.” She added, “I want Beyoncé to do my tag ’cause I just started rapping.”

White recalled working on “The Bold and the Beautiful” during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I was kissing mannequins during that time of my life,” she said.

Ayers said fans online still ask when her character, Paris, will return.

“And I haven’t even been to Paris yet,” White said.

She named 2012, the year she competed on “The X Factor,” as Los Angeles’ best year. “That season of ‘X Factor’ was the best season. You can quote me on that,” she said.

Willie Jones joins

Jones, who is from Nashville, Tennessee, is staying with White. She said he has a song with Beyoncé and that he got her out of the house.

“I’ve known him since ‘X Factor.’ He was 17 and I was 12,” White said. “He’s my favorite person in the world.”

Jones recalled meeting her during the show’s live rounds. “I always thought she was dope,” he said.

White said Jones was the one who put Bobby Brown on the phone. She said it was Jones’ birthday and that they had planned to attend a rodeo but missed it because of trouble flying out of Los Angeles International Airport.

The pair closed the episode with a freestyle over a drill beat White made.

“This is what happens when you go three years without having friends,” White said earlier. “You just talk too much.”
