Last night, undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney attempted to defend his title for the second time. In one of the most anticipated boxing matches of the year, he faced future Hall of Famer Vasiliy Lomachenko at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney came into the fight with a 29-0 record, while former champion Lomachenko has won three consecutive fights since losing to Teofimo Lopez in 2020. The Ukrainian hoped to add undisputed to his list of accomplishments.

What happened every round in Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko’s fight?

In the first round, Haney pressed the action and displayed good bodywork. Lomachenko, on the other hand, finished it with a flurry of punches that enraged the crowd. The second round began with Haney demonstrating why his jab is one of the best in the game by being crisp and accurate. Vasiliy pierced the guard with a stinging combination in the middle.

Lomachenko clearly won the third round, which was the best of the fight up to that point. He rolled forward, shooting at odd angles. Haney took a few wild swings and missed. Haney started the fourth round by concentrating on his jab technique and keeping his opponent on the outside. Despite Devin’s efforts to establish his lead leg, Lomachenko repeatedly broke through.

The fifth round, Vasiliy’s hit Devin with a straight left that stunned him a little bit but Devin gathered himself after a brief moment. Haney then successfully completed the round with his bodywork and jab. Loma’s left his abdomen red at the end of round 6 due to Haney’s stinging right hand attacks on Loma’s body. In the seventh round, while ‘The Dream’ continued to work the body with lefts and rights, Loma showed improved upstairs work.

Haney’s jab won the fight in rounds 8 and 9, with the crowd going crazy every time Loma landed. Both men stood firm, with neither taking a step back after being punished. Fans would all agree that round 10 was Loma’s best performance of the night. Loma swarmed Devin for the rest of the round after catching him with a big combination.

The action heated up in the next round, with Loma buzzing Devin with a vintage left cross. Devin, on the other hand, managed to respond with overhands in the phone booth range. After that, Devin walked him back for the rest of the way.

During the final round of an incredibly impressive fight, the audience was on its feet. Loma out-punched Devin and swarmed him with stinging and accurate shots. Despite being the smaller fighter, Loma appeared to have the energy and speed of a much younger athlete.

Did Vasiliy Lomachenko get robbed?

Lomachenko appeared to have won over half of the 12-round fight. However, due to the effective body shots he landed last night, Haney came out on top in the judges’ eyes.

The Ukrainian attempted and landed more punches than his opponent in terms of punching stats. Devin was outstruck by Vasiliy 564 to 405.

According to the judges’ scorecards, all three judges favored Devin Haney. Judge Dave Moretti gave the American a 116-112 victory. David Sutherland and Tim Cheatham won the game 115-113. Devin has now successfully defended his undisputed lightweight title against Lomachenko, a former unified lightweight champion.

Haney’s professional record now stands at 30-0 after passing his toughest test yet. The 24-year-old hinted at moving up a weight class in his post-fight announcement.

Lomachenko spoke briefly about his fight with Devin Haney in a post-fight interview. He also discussed his boxing future.

What’s next for Devin Haney?

At 135, Devin Haney should target ‘Sugar’ Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. He should fight those fights next for his legacy and a good payday before moving up to 140 and attempting to become undisputed at that weight class.

What do other fighters have to say about Devin Haney’s big time win?

Many boxers reacted to Devin Haney’s victory, including Terrence Crawford, Ryan Garcia, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Shawn Porter, and Andre Berto.
