An arrest has been made for a sexual assault in an Atlanta nightclub, The Opera, that was live streamed on Facebook by the victim Jasmine Eiland.
Dominique Williams turned himself in on Tuesday, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was charged with aggravated sodomy and is being held without bond.
The attack happened on January 20 in Opera nightclub where victim Jasmine Eiland was celebrating her birthday. Eiland was livestreaming the celebration on Facebook when she began to dance with Williams. When he started to violate her, she screamed for him to stop and yelled for help. Williams was later seen carrying Eiland off the dance floor. The video was later removed from Facebook, but copies of it remain online. It appeared that Jasmine was drugged by Dominique Williams and was raped.
The Atlanta Police Department contacted Williams a day after the attack but did not release his name because the investigation was active. The police department says Eiland is cooperating with investigators.
The young woman has hired attorney Chris Stewart, who represented the family of Alton Sterling after he was killed by police, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Williams retained Shequel Ross, who released a statement denying any wrongdoing.
“There were people in very close proximity to Mr. Williams and Ms. Eiland’s consensual dance–and they were not alerted, nor did they offer assistance because nothing resembling an assault was taking place,” a spokesperson for the law firm said.
Chris Stewart and Jasmine Eiland released a statement today about this incident.
The incident is still under investigation by the Atlanta Police Department Special Victims Unit.
