The first trailer for “Dune: Part 3” is here, offering fans a sweeping and ominous preview of the final installment in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” trilogy, based on Frank Herbert’s second novel, “Dune Messiah.”
The film features the return of familiar faces from the series’ first two installments and introduces some fresh faces as well, including the villain, played by Robert Pattinson. One character’s return is also a surprise for those who may not be as familiar with the series.
In his speech at the trailer’s launch event on Monday, Villeneuve explained that “Dune: Part 3” came about because of his sense of obligation to the fans after seeing the fervor during the global press tour for “Dune: Part 2.”
“As a filmmaker… ” You are in a relationship with the audience, and I felt a responsibility to finish the story,” Villeneuve explained. He added that even as plans for another film were in the works, he couldn’t shake off the imagery for “Dune: Part 3” in his mind.
He also warned that the final installment in the series will be quite different.
“It will be a very different film… more action-packed and more tense and more muscular,” Villeneuve explained. He added, “If the first movie was contemplation and the second was a war movie, this one is a thriller.”
17-Year Time Jump in “Dune: Part 3.”

In “Dune: Part 3,” there is a 17-year time jump from the previous two films in the series. Villeneuve explained that this is beyond the time jump in the original novel.
He also explained that in “Dune: Part 3,” developments have occurred on Arrakis. Villeneuve explained that there are even new planets in “Dune: Part 3.”
“The world changed in those years. The climate is different… we are visiting places you have not seen before,” he said.
Paul Atreides remains at the heart of the film, now an emperor due to the interstellar jihad he unleashed in the first film. His transformation from hero to villain, driven by his new responsibilities as an emperor who has caused the deaths of billions, is a major part of this film.
The film also explores how Paul Atreides deals with the consequences of having too much power, as explained by Villeneuve.
“We see Paul dealing with the consequences of having too much power… people trying to overthrow him,” he said.
A Conspiracy Forms Against the Emperor

The trailer also indicates that a new coalition is forming against Paul Atreides, including the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, the Bene Tleilax, and even his political wife, Princess Irulan.
However, despite this new development, Villeneuve assures fans that the heart of the film remains intact.
“The heart is still a love story… the relationship between Paul and Chani,” he said.

However, Chani’s true intentions remain a mystery after she left in the previous film, as hinted at in the trailer, which might show her confronting Paul Atreides.
New Generation, New Mysteries
The film also introduces Paul Atreides and Chani’s children, who are twins Leto II and Ghanima, but their real involvement remains a mystery. However, it has been reported that their characters look older than their original counterparts, which might mean a new twist in their storyline.

Meanwhile, Anya Taylor-Joy reprises her role as an older Alia, a fiercely loyal ally to Paul Atreides.
“She carries the weight and the wisdom of generations,” Taylor-Joy said, as she described her character’s intense psychological depth and loyalty.
The Return of Duncan Idaho With a Twist

The trailer also confirms the return of Duncan Idaho, though Villeneuve did not go into detail about his transformation. In the original story, Idaho returns as a ghola, a being created for a specific purpose, with a changed identity.
Villeneuve did hint at the importance of Idaho’s return in the movie.
“He comes back at the right moment… Paul is struggling with his identity, and that comeback will have a tremendous impact,” Villeneuve said.
Robert Pattinson’s Shape-Shifting Villain

One of the most anticipated scenes is Pattinson’s appearance as Scytale, a shape-shifting villain connected to the plot against Paul.
Pattinson talked about the character, saying it is hard to tell which side Scytale is on. “You can’t really tell whose side he’s on… I wouldn’t say he’s a conventional bad guy,” Pattinson said about his character in Dune: Part 3.
Power, Loyalty, and Doubt

The return of other characters, such as Stilgar, Lady Jessica, and Gurney Halleck, also suggests a sense of doubt about Paul’s rule.
Javier Bardem, who plays Stilgar, talked about his character, saying that though Stilgar is a believer, his return is also about doubt. “He’s in a contradiction between the loyalty to the idea… and the result of that idea becoming something else,” Bardem said about Stilgar’s character in Dune: Part 3.
The End or Just the Beginning
While Dune: Part 3 is supposed to be the conclusion of Paul Atreides’ story, it is also the conclusion of the House Atreides’ story. Villeneuve, though, said that Dune: Part 3 is supposed to be his last installment of the series, but the series may continue.
Dune: Part 3 is scheduled for release on Dec. 18, which may create a box office clash with Avengers: Doomsday. Villeneuve, though, is clear about his intentions for Dune: Part 3.
