A gunman entered a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and started to open fire.

Authorities and ambulances started to arrived at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue around 10:00 AM EST. A service was taking place at the time the gunman entered.

There are multiple casualties, a police spokesman said, adding that three officers were among them.

The gunman has now surrendered and is in custody but residents are still being advised to stay at home.

This is allegedly a hate crime on Jewish people.

A Synagogue is a building where a Jewish assembly or congregation meets for religious worship and instruction, according to Dictionary.Com

A spokesman for the Pittsburgh Police Department, Jason Lando, said that officers were still carrying out searches at the synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

At least eleven people at the scene have been pronounced dead. The others have been transported to Mercy Hospital. Twelve people have been shot, according to CNN.
