Everything VisionQuest Is Quietly Setting Up for Avengers: Doomsday

Everyone’s focused on discussing the Avengers: Doomsday cast list when the show that could potentially give us the most significant setup during this entire run of Marvel could very well be in front of our eyes right now, but dismissed completely.

VisionQuest and why it’ll prove to be more important than most anticipate.

Let’s start with the ending Agatha All Along gave us

The second half of Agatha All Along ended quite intentionally. We saw Billy embarking on a journey to find his brother. This wasn’t some random beat. This was a message, a setup Marvel only gives you when it already knows someone else will take the baton from them.

Now, compare the last two episodes of VisionQuest. Vision finds Tommy.

This needs some more thought. One brother is on a quest while the other has just been discovered by a synthetic being pretending to be their father. These stories cross paths. You can’t introduce both brothers, one searching and the other found by a synthezoid who pretends to be his father, and then never let the two share a single moment together. It’s going to happen.

Comics have already written the story for us

Now let’s look deeper into how that setup changes VisionQuest from a nice character beat into an integral part of the Marvel universe.

According to the comics, as soon as Tommy and Billy reunite, they set out on a hunt for their missing mother. It doesn’t come as a surprise considering how much those boys went through during their lives. They don’t know if they’ve seen Wanda or if she was a magical illusion created by an evil witch. Naturally, the boys are going to try and find out the truth.

That’s right: the story brings Wanda back, and as they find her, they realize she’s with Doctor Doom. He wants her magic powers for himself.

Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom in Marvel. A villain the next two Avengers films revolve around.

I’m almost certain this wasn’t some coincidence Marvel decided to brush off and ignore.

How this ties into Avengers: Doomsday/Secret War

As you can see, if VisionQuest picks up on that plot point directly or even slightly, that series Marvel dubbed “the Vision one” becomes the link to Avengers: Doomsday/Secret Wars. No tone reference. No cameo in the end credit sequence. A causal link to the two largest films Marvel plans to create in its last two movies.

This would be a game-changing moment for the MCU’s storytelling and plotlines. First of all, it means that the Scarlet Witch question hanging over the heads of the fandom for the past year after Multiverse of Madness will be answered not in one of those action-packed Avengers films but in the series dedicated to Vision and his wife and children.

Moreover, this is the correct way Marvel could answer it. WandaVision storyline was a story that belonged to Vision and Wanda’s family more than anything. It had more to do with her grief and domesticity than anything Avengers were supposed to solve. Thus, returning Wanda in a big, noisy blockbuster wouldn’t be enough. Bringing her back through her sons’ efforts would have more meaning.

The explanation problem

Marvel faces another challenge here. If Wanda comes back in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, then her resurrection needs an explanation that is always difficult to provide in a blockbuster with a lot of characters to deal with. Every minute spent on explaining that is another minute spent on nothing Marvel paid money for.

A series could easily solve that problem, as VisionQuest would introduce us to a resurrected Scarlet Witch and establish why Doctor Doom kidnapped her and for what purposes.

My vision of things

It seems like Marvel is fully aware of its potential here. I think Billy’s setup in Agatha All Along was part of Marvel’s plan for the next couple of years, while Tommy’s appearance in Vision Quest was another piece of that puzzle.

And I’m sure that as soon as Wanda comes back to us one day, we’ll realize Vision Quest has done more to create the Marvel universe we’ve all loved than we could imagine.

Don’t disregard the “synthezoid story” just because it seems less prominent than everything else right now.
