Hayley Atwell has revealed the reasons behind her return as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday for the first time in an interview with Discussing Film. Atwell explained that Peggy’s love story with Steve remains the driving force for her character and their continued relationship.
Atwell refused to divulge any real details about the film, insisting that she hadn’t even seen the final cut. “I just think what I can say without spoiling it. I mean, it helps that I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know exactly how it’s put together,” she said.
The actress commented on her working relationship with co-star Chris, whom she stated has been with her since they first started their careers, “Chris I’ve known for so long now, and it feels like when we first met we were like babies,” she enthused. “We’re in such different stages of our lives, and we’re embarking on something that we had no idea would land in the way that it did and that we’d be here all these years later with the fans again, talking about it.”
The Marvel star praised fans’ attachment to the romantic storyline, explaining that the connection between Steve and Peggy is special: “I think it’s really touching to me that their love story is an enduring one,” she said. “You can’t really have Steve without Peggy, or without the longing for Peggy.”
Atwell then claimed her reasoning for reprising her role as Peggy has always been to give the character something more to do each time she appears, “Any time I’ve come back, I’ve really wanted Peggy to have something different to do, something new, something more, to feel that she’s evolved in some way or that the story has kind of moved forward,” she concluded. “The stakes are so high. It’s such an existential epic of a movie, and you see Peggy in a very different light responding to that.”
