The House of Representatives took a significant step on Wednesday by voting to approve legislation that may result in the US government outlawing the well-known video-sharing app TikTok. With one member present, the vote total was 352-65, indicating strong bipartisan support for the proposal.
Legislators from all political stripes are becoming increasingly concerned about the alleged national security concerns that TikTok poses, which is what is motivating them to write the bill. Under increased attention for how it handles user data and possible links to the Chinese government is ByteDance, the parent firm of TikTok, which is based in China.
Lawmakers have expressed concern that foreign entities may utilize the app’s large user base—roughly 170 million in the United States alone—for spying or other nefarious purposes.
On the other hand, TikTok is adamantly against the new law and has started a strong lobbying campaign to prevent it from being passed. The firm contends that prohibiting the app will violate users’ First Amendment rights and harm the hundreds of small companies, influencers, and content creators that depend on its platform for cash and visibility.
Following the House decision, TikTok issued a statement urging senators to carefully study the bill’s ramifications before voting, underlining the possible harm it could cause to American businesses and individuals.
The legislation’s fate now rests with the Senate, where its chances are unknown. While some senators have expressed similar worries to their House counterparts, others may be influenced by arguments about the economic and societal consequences of banning TikTok.
President Joe Biden has expressed support for the plan, saying that if it reaches his desk, he will sign it into law. His support adds weight to the congressional effort to limit TikTok’s business in the United States.
