Hulu is moving forward with Ryan Coogler’s new adaptation of The X-Files.
According to Hulu, it greenlit the reimagined science fiction drama classic on Tuesday, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel. Coogler, the director of “Black Panther” and “Sinners,” wrote and directed the pilot episode.
The show follows two highly decorated but very different FBI agents who form an unusual partnership after being transferred to a mysterious division that investigates unexplained phenomena.
“I’ve loved ‘The X-Files’ for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” Coogler said in a statement.
He explained that they want to pay tribute to what made so many people fall in love with Chris Carter’s original series while finding their own way into it.
“Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience,” Coogler added.
Carter created The X-Files, which ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The franchise also featured two movies and a revival in 2016 and 2018. Carter is an executive producer of the reboot.
Deadwyler gained recognition for her leading role in the 2022 film Till. Patel is known for Yesterday and the HBO Max miniseries Station Eleven.
The series is a project of Onyx Collective and 20th Television, in association with Proximity Media, which Coogler founded with his wife, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian.
In a joint statement, the Proximity founders said they were especially excited to work with showrunner Jennifer Yale, producer Simone Harris and the cast and crew “as we bring this new chapter of ‘The X-Files’ to life.” They said it was “incredibly special” to have fellow Proximity founder Ludwig Göransson, an Oscar winner, compose the pilot’s score.
Besides that, Coogler, Yale, who is also a showrunner, and Zinzi Coogler, Ohanian, and Carter will be the executive producers of the series. Harris, Deadwyler, and Patel will also have producing credits.
Hulu has not announced a premiere date.
