Turkish-born pop provocateur INJI released “BRIGHT IDEAS” this Friday, a genre-defying track the artist, who currently lives in New York City, calls her most daring work yet.
Born out of a break-up, the track is an invitation to dance instead of sulking, with hyperpop, rap, and electronic music layered over Y2K pop hooks. While the arrangement is inspired by the abrasive maximalism of such artists as M.I.A. and Death Grips, it allows INJI’s brassy and provocative vocal style to come through.
The release was accompanied by what INJI called her most ambitious video so far, a short avant-garde film shot in just one week that symbolized the conflict between self-assurance and desire featured in the track.
INJI said that the track had been created almost completely via freestyle during her long flight home.
“I wrote this song right after landing a brutal red-eye coming back from a 48-hour bender in NYC, freestyling almost the entire thing,” INJI explained in a statement. “I was feeling my most confident after getting hella professional and romantic attention at this huge party, and yet the only thing on my mind was yearning for this no-good-for-me relationship.”
“I think a lot of the magic of this song comes from the childlike honesty and naivete of the writing,” she added.
The release comes just a few days ahead of INJI’s performance at Lollapalooza. She will take the stage at Airbnb in Chicago on Sunday, August 2nd, at 4 p.m.
