Hip-hop icon and billionaire entrepreneur Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has filed a lawsuit against Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee and a former anonymous accuser, known as Jane Doe, alleging they conspired to falsely accuse him of sexual assault for financial gain. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, claims that their actions caused Jay-Z to suffer at least $20 million in damages due to defamation, malicious prosecution, and conspiracy.
Jay-Z has consistently denied the accusations, calling them a “blackmail attempt”, and is now taking legal action to hold those responsible accountable.
Allegations of False Accusations and Attempted Extortion
Jane Doe previously accused Jay-Z and music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping her at an afterparty following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards when she was just 13 years old. The allegations surfaced publicly in a December 2024 interview with NBC News, where Doe detailed her claims against both men. However, Jay-Z’s legal team argues that her allegations were fabricated under pressure from Tony Buzbee, who allegedly urged her to proceed with the lawsuit despite knowing the claims were false.
The lawsuit states that Doe admitted Buzbee coerced her into making the allegations after an earlier attempt to extort Jay-Z failed. The rap mogul argues that Buzbee and Doe acted out of greed and a blatant disregard for the truth, weaponizing the legal system to damage his reputation.
Inconsistencies in Jane Doe’s Claims Raise Doubts
Jay-Z’s attorneys highlight significant inconsistencies in Jane Doe’s story, undermining the credibility of her accusations. Among the most glaring issues are:
- False timeline of events: Doe claimed she met musician Benji Madden at the afterparty. However, records show that Madden was on tour at the time and could not have attended.
- Conflicting account of parental involvement: Jane Doe said her father picked her up from the alleged party, but her father has stated that he does not recall such an event ever happening.
- History of mental health struggles: Public records suggest that Jane Doe has a history of mental health challenges, which Jay-Z’s legal team argues should be considered when evaluating her claims.

On February 13, 2025, a New York court denied Buzbee’s request to join the case as an attorney. The very next day, Jane Doe voluntarily dropped her lawsuit, a move that Jay-Z described as a “clear victory” against the false claims.
With the case dismissed, Jay-Z is now pursuing legal action against Buzbee and Jane Doe, arguing that their actions caused irreparable damage to his name and career.
New Lawsuit Alleges Defamation and Conspiracy
Jay-Z’s lawsuit, filed in Alabama, is not his only legal battle against Buzbee. He has also filed a separate defamation lawsuit in Los Angeles, accusing Buzbee of continuing his efforts to smear Jay-Z’s reputation even after the original case was dropped.
According to Jay-Z’s attorneys, Buzbee is allegedly planning to release false statements suggesting that Jane Doe was intimidated into withdrawing her lawsuit. The new legal filings aim to prevent any further defamation and reputational harm caused by the attorney’s actions.
No Response from Buzbee or Jane Doe
Despite the new lawsuits, neither Tony Buzbee nor Jane Doe has publicly responded to the allegations against them. However, Buzbee has previously defended his client, insisting that she stands by her allegations despite acknowledging certain inconsistencies in her story.
As the legal battle unfolds, Jay-Z remains determined to clear his name and hold those responsible accountable for what he sees as a deliberate and malicious attempt to tarnish his reputation.
