Jim Parsons Says He’d Never Play Sheldon Again for Any Amount of Money

Jim Parsons has revealed that he does not intend to return to his iconic character, Sheldon Cooper, anytime soon. Parsons says the time he spent playing Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory was highly stressful and miserable, and for this reason alone, no salary can make him want to do it again.

In an interview on the All Out With Jon Dean podcast, Parsons stated that nothing would make him return to the character, not even “any amount of money.” He added that the job “was stressful and miserable at times” and “I made myself miserable.”

According to Parsons, despite how successful the show was, he never enjoyed himself on set. When talking about some of the best moments of his life, he said he felt more stressed than happy at the time, as reported in the interview. Parsons felt like he had too many plates spinning all at once, and that everything good he experienced in his life was because he worked himself to exhaustion.

The 53-year-old actor has likened this obsession to something akin to obsessive-compulsive disorder, and not just hard work, as per a report by AOL covering the interview. Toward the end of the interview, he described the show as something difficult yet unavoidable in his career, calling it “self-tortured,” according to Complex.

The sitcom ran for 12 seasons and 279 episodes on CBS from 2007 until May 2019, according to People. In recognition of his stellar performances, Parsons has been awarded four Emmy Awards for best lead actor in a comedy series and a Golden Globe for his performance as the demanding theoretical physicist, as noted by AOL.

The character has also made Parsons one of the highest-paid actors on television, with the principal cast reportedly earning around $1 million per episode at the show’s peak, per ScreenRant.

The new development comes amid growing interest in the franchise, with a spin-off of the show called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, starring Kevin Sussman as the comic book shop owner Stuart, slated to air on HBO Max, per TVLine.

This will make fans speculate whether Parsons would be returning as Sheldon in the spin-off, as well. However, his last appearance in the franchise was in the 2024 series finale of its prequel, Young Sheldon.
