A 20-year-old woman got shot to death by a homeowner in upstate New York, police said on Monday.

Kaylin Gillis was in a vehicle with three companions searching for one more companion’s home in Hebron, New York, on Saturday night when they erroneously turned into the wrong driveway.

After the vehicle had been in the driveway for a “very short time,” Kevin Monahan emerged from his home and discharged two shots at the women and their car while they were trying to exit his property, police said. One of the bullets struck Gillis.

Gillis’ friends proceeded to the vehicle to Salem, a nearby town, to get cell service and call for assistance. The first responders did mouth-to-mouth with Gillis, but sadly she was pronounced dead.

When police first arrived at Kevin Monahan’s residence to speak with him about the shooting, he wouldn’t emerge from his home.

After Monahan spoke with a 911 dispatcher and authorities face-to-face for approximately 60 minutes, he got arrested.

The charge against Monahan is second-degree murder. He is currently getting held in the Warren Region Prison.
