Lena Waithe is getting her name thrown into the mud on Twitter right now for one of her recent projects ‘THEM’ a new Amazon thriller series.
The anthology series explores terror in America. The 1950s-set first season centers on a black family who moves from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration. The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, next-door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.
‘THEM’ touches on the black family struggle to the most extreme heights. In the show you can see realistic racist violent scenes and in the fifth episode the extreme level gets turns up a notch.
Social media is calling out Lena Waithe about her recent projects displaying black pain. ‘Queen & Slim’ touched on a black couple on the run from the police. The did lack story telling and there was no clear direction where the movie was going. At the end, Queen & Slim were gunned down by police trying to escape on a plane fleeing the country.
People are also bringing up the sexual harassment allegations that happened on ‘The Chi’ set with Jason Mitchell. Waithe revealed in an interview that that she knew of the allegations after filming had wrapped on season one of “The Chi” and took preemptive and corrective measures to handle the situation. After being asked why she didn’t fire Jason Mitchell on The Breakfast Club. Waithe says, “I don’t have the power to fire anyone. I don’t. I wish I did.” She continues: “I don’t own “The Chi.” I created it. I sold it. I could be fired off “The Chi.” That’s real. People don’t understand that.” Waithe did reveal she regret sitting back and letting HR handle the situation.
Social media is also bringing up the time she allegedly stole filmmaker Nina Lee work. Lena Waithe teamed up with ATTN: on a original scripted series called Girls Room. It was for Dove’s Self-Esteem Project for young women. Dove revealed to us that started to work on the project and named the series before Lena Waithe was apart of the project.
While Waithe serves as an executive producer for ‘THEM’ she doesn’t deserve a lot of the backlash she is getting for this project. Little Marvin is the executive producer, creator, and writer. Majority of the project is his. Waithe is no where to be found when it came to writing and directing any of these episodes.
