Already under indictment on murder-for-hire charges filed in Los Angeles, Chicago rapper Lil Durk has now been implicated in the 2022 killing of an alleged gang leader named Stephon Mack, according to newly unsealed court records. The records, unearthed Wednesday ahead of a detention hearing, allege that Lil Durk, legal name Devontay Banks, was linked to the fatal shooting of Mack on the Far South Side of Chicago.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Mack, identified by the FBI as a leader of the Smashville faction of the Gangster Disciples, was gunned down outside the Youth Peace Center in Roseland. The killing allegedly stems from a cycle of gang retaliation following the 2021 murder of Banks’ brother, DThang, in suburban Harvey. Authorities have linked DThang’s death to a faction of the Gangster Disciples.
Although two men have been charged in Mack’s death, Banks has not been formally accused of involvement in the Chicago case. However, federal prosecutors in Los Angeles are reportedly considering using these allegations to argue for Banks’ continued detention.
An investigation into Mack’s murder is still ongoing in Chicago, as police work to unravel how the violence of gangs may be tied to orchestrated retaliation. Meanwhile, Lil Durk’s legal woes mount as prosecutors link him to a string of criminal incidents across state lines.
Banks has continuously denied involvement in any criminal activity, remaining focused on his music. His lawyers have not commented on the newly unsealed court records.
