Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will not appear in any live-action Disney+ series due to existing rights agreements with Sony Pictures. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, clarified the situation, stating:
“[Sony has] the long-form television rights, we can do 30-minute animation.”
This statement sheds light on the complex web of rights surrounding one of Marvel’s most iconic characters and what it means for the future of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Why Can’t Spider-Man Appear in a Live-Action Disney+ Show?
The reason for this restriction lies in Sony Pictures’ ownership of the long-form television rights to Spider-Man. While Marvel Studios and Disney have successfully collaborated with Sony on Spider-Man’s big-screen appearances, Sony retains control over any live-action television projects featuring the web-slinger.
This means that Marvel Studios can continue to use Spider-Man in films and animated projects under specific conditions, but a live-action Disney+ series centered on Holland’s version of Peter Parker is not possible unless Sony and Disney reach a new agreement.
Marvel’s Solution: Animated Spider-Man Series
To work around these restrictions, Marvel Studios has turned to animation. Winderbaum’s mention of “30-minute animation” refers to Marvel’s ability to produce animated Spider-Man content, leading to the creation of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
The 10-episode animated series debuted on Disney+ on January 29, 2025, offering a fresh take on Peter Parker’s origin story. The series features:
- Hudson Thames as the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
- Charlie Cox reprising his MCU role as Daredevil.
- A mix of classic and modern storytelling elements appealing to both new and longtime Spider-Man fans.
Marvel’s approach ensures that Spider-Man remains a presence in the MCU’s Disney+ lineup, even if a live-action series is off the table.
What’s Next for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?
Although a live-action Disney+ appearance isn’t possible, fans can still look forward to Tom Holland’s return in the next Spider-Man film. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have confirmed that a fourth installment is in development, with a scheduled release date of July 24, 2026.
The film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While plot details remain under wraps, it is expected to explore Peter Parker’s journey following the dramatic events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which his secret identity was erased from the memories of the world.
Could Spider-Man Appear in a Sony TV Show?
Since Sony owns the live-action television rights, they have the ability to develop a Spider-Man-related series for platforms outside Disney+. This raises the possibility of:
- A Spider-Man spin-off series under Sony’s control.
- Peter Parker’s potential involvement in Sony’s Venom and Morbius universe.
- More crossovers between Sony and the MCU in future films.
While nothing has been officially announced, Sony’s continued investment in the Spider-Verse—including live-action projects like Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter—suggests they may explore this option in the future.
The Future of Spider-Man in the MCU
Spider-Man remains one of the most beloved superheroes in pop culture, and despite the legal complexities, both Sony and Marvel Studios are committed to keeping the character at the forefront of superhero storytelling.
Although fans won’t see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in a Disney+ live-action series, Marvel’s animated projects and upcoming theatrical releases ensure that Peter Parker’s journey is far from over. With a new animated show, a fourth Spider-Man film in development, and potential Sony projects on the horizon, the future looks bright for everyone’s favorite web-slinger.
