Marvel Studios Reportedly Considering Jonathan Majors’ Return as Kang

Marvel Studios is reportedly reconsidering bringing back Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to a recent report by ScreenGeek, studio head Kevin Feige is contemplating Majors’ return to properly conclude Kang’s storyline in a future Marvel project.

The news comes after Marvel Studios severed ties with the actor in December 2023 following his conviction on two misdemeanor charges related to a March 2023 incident involving his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. This legal outcome led to significant restructuring within the MCU’s overarching narrative, including the rebranding of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday and the introduction of Doctor Doom as a new central antagonist.

Despite these major shifts, Marvel is reportedly weighing its options regarding Majors’ return, which could allow the studio to address unresolved plotlines surrounding Kang.

Marvel’s Decision to Cut Ties with Majors

Legal Troubles and Conviction

Jonathan Majors was initially arrested in March 2023 following allegations of assault and harassment by his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. After months of legal proceedings, he was convicted on two misdemeanor charges in December 2023. While the case garnered widespread media attention, Marvel Studios acted swiftly by announcing that Majors would no longer be part of the MCU.

Impact on Marvel Studios and the MCU Timeline

Majors’ firing left Marvel Studios in a precarious position, as his character, Kang the Conqueror, had already been established as the primary antagonist of the Multiverse Saga. His role had been set up in Loki Season 1 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, with plans for him to be the next Thanos-level threat across multiple MCU projects.

With his departure, Marvel faced challenges in restructuring its narrative.

How Marvel Adjusted Its Plans Without Majors

The Rebranding of Avengers 5

Before Majors’ legal troubles, the fifth Avengers film was titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, emphasizing Kang’s central role in the next chapter of the MCU. However, with his removal from the franchise, Marvel Studios scrapped the title and rebranded the film as Avengers: Doomsday.

According to Vulture, Robert Downey Jr. is now set to return to the MCU, portraying Doctor Doom, a character that has long been rumored to be a major villain in the franchise. This shift marked a significant change in Marvel’s long-term storytelling approach.

Possible Recasting Considerations

Following Majors’ exit, there were discussions about recasting Kang with another actor. Several names were rumored to be in contention, but Marvel remained tight-lipped on whether they would replace the character entirely or pivot to a different villain.

However, rather than immediately recasting, the studio appeared to move away from Kang as the primary antagonist and focused on reworking the upcoming Avengers films.

Why Marvel Is Reportedly Considering Majors’ Return

Despite Marvel’s initial decision to move on from Jonathan Majors, reports indicate that Kevin Feige and other key executives are now reconsidering their stance.

Unresolved Kang Storylines

Kang’s presence in the MCU was meant to span multiple films and Disney+ series. His variants, such as He Who Remains (Loki Season 1) and Victor Timely (Loki Season 2), hinted at a much larger storyline that was left incomplete due to Majors’ legal troubles.

Bringing Majors back could provide an opportunity for Marvel to properly conclude Kang’s arc rather than abruptly abandoning it.

Audience Reception and Industry Challenges

Despite the controversy surrounding his legal case, Majors still has a dedicated fanbase, and his performance as Kang was widely praised. Some industry analysts believe that Marvel’s struggles with declining box office returns and audience engagement may be a factor in their reconsideration of his return.

Additionally, with recent shifts in Hollywood’s handling of actors facing legal issues, Marvel might be evaluating whether the backlash from bringing Majors back would outweigh the potential benefits of resolving his character’s storyline.

Jonathan Majors’ Future Projects

While his status with Marvel remains uncertain, Jonathan Majors is set to appear in Magazine Dreams, a long-delayed drama in which he plays an aspiring bodybuilder struggling with personal demons. The film, originally scheduled for release in 2023, was delayed due to Majors’ legal troubles but is now set to hit theaters on March 21, 2025.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film’s first trailer was recently released, marking Majors’ first major public return to the spotlight since his legal issues.

What’s Next for the MCU and Kang?

As of now, Marvel Studios has not made an official statement regarding Jonathan Majors’ potential return. Discussions are reportedly still in the early stages, and it remains unclear whether Feige and the studio will ultimately move forward with this decision.

However, if Marvel does decide to bring Majors back, it could significantly impact the trajectory of the MCU, bringing Kang’s storyline back into focus and potentially shifting the direction of future films.

With Avengers: Doomsday slated for release in May 2026, fans will be eagerly watching for any official updates on Marvel’s plans for Kang and the greater Multiverse Saga.

Stay tuned for further developments as the situation unfolds.
