Megan Thee Stallion has been granted a five-year civil harassment restraining order against fellow rapper Tory Lanez. The decision, rendered by a California court on January 9, 2025, aims to protect Megan from further harassment and contact initiated by Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting her in July 2020.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, appeared at the hearing via video call. She testified about the ongoing trauma and lack of peace she has experienced since the 2020 shooting incident. Megan recounted that she seldom leaves her home except for work and endures harassment, including individuals shouting “free Tory” during her performances. She emphasized that, despite Lanez’s incarceration, the harassment has persisted, exacerbating her emotional distress.
The court acknowledged the “ripple effect” of the violent act perpetrated by Lanez, noting that such incidents often lead to prolonged psychological and emotional consequences for victims. The judge stated, “We have a shooting that took place, and with a violent act like that, there’s a ripple effect that continues on. Ms. Pete’s testimony is that the ripple effect has been significant—conduct that culminated in [Tory] shooting approximately five rounds at petitioner that resulted in injuries to her.”
The restraining order prohibits Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, from contacting Megan directly or indirectly, including through third parties or online platforms. This measure addresses Megan’s concerns that Lanez has been orchestrating harassment campaigns from prison via social media and bloggers. In her petition, Megan accused Lanez of employing third-party online bloggers to spread defamatory statements, asserting that “even from behind bars, Mr. Peterson continues to terrorize Ms. Pete.”
Lanez’s legal team has previously denied these allegations, contending that he has not engaged in any form of contact with Megan since his incarceration. They argue that the restraining order infringes upon his constitutional rights, particularly freedom of speech. In response to Megan’s petition, Lanez accused her of misusing the justice system, stating that she is attempting to stifle his free speech.
The legal battle between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez has been ongoing since the July 2020 incident, where Lanez was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and gross negligence in discharging his firearm..
