Miya Cech is set to bring the iconic earthbender, Toph Beifong, to life in the upcoming second season of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. The 22-year-old actress, known for her role in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, will join the experienced element-bending team alongside Aang, Katara, and Sokka.
Netflix announced the casting in June, revealing that they were seeking a “sassy, confident, and unfiltered” actress to portray the character who had suppressed her abilities for most of her life. The casting call hinted at parallels to the animated Nickelodeon series, where Toph was a guardian from her overprotective parents due to her blindness. She later found refuge with badger moles, whom she considered the “first earth benders.”
The second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender is expected to delve into similar narrative threads as the animated series and the subsequent film. Toph’s origins, her training with Aang, and her involvement in the fight against the Dai Li are all potential storylines that could be adapted for the Netflix series.
Cech has already begun training for the role, working with a blind producer and consultant to ensure authentic representation of the blindness community. While the actress has yet to see the final aesthetic and costume for Toph, she expressed excitement about the project.
Netflix confirmed at the TUDUM event that production on Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is underway. The teaser suggests that the team will shift their focus to the Earth Kingdom, a key setting in the second season. As fans eagerly await the release of the new season, the casting of Miya Cech as Toph Beifong adds another layer of anticipation to the highly anticipated series.
