A Mooresville police officer was arrested Wednesday and accused of using the department’s license plate camera database to track her boyfriend’s ex-wife, according to court records and the town’s police chief.
Elizabeth Anne Snowman, 36, of Mooresville, is charged with one misdemeanor count of accessing computers. An arrest warrant accuses her of searching the Flock system for a vehicle “for a purpose other than official law enforcement duties.”
Snowman was released on a $5,000 bond, Iredell County court records show. She is due in court Aug. 27.
Police Chief Ron Campurciani said at a news conference Wednesday that an internal audit found Snowman searched the database 31 times, all but two of them while on duty. Officers must enter a reason for each search, and the chief said Snowman logged most of hers as motor vehicle infractions.
At least 10 other officers in the department, which has 124 officers, are under investigation over similar allegations, Campurciani said. Three of those cases appear serious enough that additional charges are possible.
The department is now requiring officers to attach a case number to justify searches.
“We have the safeguards we thought were enough,” Campurciani said.
