German Mathews, a 40-year-old Nicaraguan man with a troubling history of five deportations from the United States, was sentenced to 19 years in prison on April 29th for sexually assaulting a developmentally disabled Ohio woman. The heinous attack occurred as the victim was walking to a bus stop.
According to the New York Post, the details of the incident reveal a disturbing sequence of events. Mathews attempted to flee while still atop the victim when police responded to a distress call, but was quickly apprehended. The suspect’s hands were stained with the victim’s blood, according to police Sgt. Jackie Dreyer, emphasizes the brutality of the assault.
As a result of the violent attack, the victim, a developmentally disabled woman, received severe head injuries and multiple facial fractures. When police arrived and discovered Mathews in the act, the situation became even more shocking.
During his court appearance, Mathews pleaded guilty to rape, felonious assault, and kidnapping charges. His lawyer, James Bogen, argued that Mathews may have suffered from alcohol-induced psychosis. Bogen revealed that Mathews, who was allegedly intoxicated after stealing liquor from a convenience store, claimed to have no recollection of the assault.
The most disturbing aspect of this case is Mathews’ claim that he was “possessed by a demon” during the attack. This claim, whether indicative of a genuine belief or an attempt to justify his heinous actions, adds an eerie dimension to an already heinous crime.
While the attorney suggests that Mathews’ behavior could be explained by alcohol-induced psychosis, the severity of the charges and the impact on the victim cast doubt on such claims. The 19-year prison sentence reflects the gravity of the crimes committed, leaving the community to deal with the fallout from a heinous incident that highlights the difficulties posed by individuals with a history of repeated deportations and criminal behavior.
