The body of a 54-year-old woman who worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory was discovered in the Carson National Forest one year after her disappearance. The cause of her death remains unknown.
Melissa Casias was last seen in June 2025. Her remains were discovered by a hiker in a remote area of the forest. Casias was employed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory – a United States government research and development center that helps design and maintain the US stockpile of nuclear weapons located in northern New Mexico.
The investigation is still underway, according to the officials.
People in online communities have made all kinds of speculations related to the case. The family reported that Casias behaved unusually before her disappearance. Also, investigators noted that Casias had left her identification behind and that her personal and work cell phones had been restored to factory defaults, which could erase records of her activities.
A handgun was reportedly found near her remains; however, its affiliation with Melissa is yet unknown. Furthermore, there is no information on the results of the examination concerning the cause of death.
There have been no indications regarding any foul play so far, and neither have investigators associated this case with other unsolved disappearances.
This case attracted additional attention due to the fact that Casias became the latest victim among several people whose connection to Los Alamos, Sandia National Laboratories, or any other national security project has led to mysterious death or disappearance.
