Two years after releasing her Grammy-winning debut album Sour, Olivia Rodrigo has returned with brand-new music.
The singer heralded the start of a new musical era with the release of “Vampire,” the lead single from her sophomore album Guts, which is scheduled for release on September 8th.
Rodrigo reunites with Sour co-creator, producer/writer Dan Nigro for the first single from her upcoming album. She also released a bloody music video that Petra Collins directed, who also handled the “brutal” and “good 4 u” visuals.
“vampire” is just our first look at the project. It begins as a moody piano ballad before growing and swelling; Rodrigo begins belting and the guitars begin shredding.
She sings about someone who took advantage of her fame and played with her emotions in lyrics like “Bloodsucker, famefucker, Bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire.” These lyrics could be directed at her ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett after she became involved in a love triangle with Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter.
Rodrigo issued the following statement regarding the inspiration for her new single “vampire”: “I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me—almost like an out-of-body experience.”
“It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to,” Rodrigo states.
Olivia Rodrigo’s “vampire” music video has already received over five million views on YouTube, as well as over 500,000 likes and 30,000 comments. The single will most likely debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart next week.
