Peacock and Sky have unveiled the much-anticipated teaser trailer for their upcoming limited drama series, “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” set to premiere on May 2, 2024. Starring acclaimed actors Melanie Lynskey, Harvey Keitel, and Jonah Hauer-King, the series is based on the international bestselling novel by Heather Morris.
Executive producer Claire Mundell shared her insights on the project, highlighting its relevance in today’s world. “We began developing this story five years ago, and I was struck by how the book became a bestseller during a time when awareness of the Holocaust was in decline. Our series tells one man’s story and experience of Auschwitz and how he found love in the darkest of places. It is a story that is as important today as it ever was,” she remarked.
Director and co-executive producer Tali Shalom-Ezer expressed the challenge of portraying a love story amidst the darkness of Auschwitz. “Claire and I talked about what a huge challenge it was going to be to make viewers believe in a love story that existed in this dark place and time. This was the task that I as director, Claire, Jacquelin, and our team took upon ourselves, and I pray that we will be able to make viewers around the world believe in the wonderful love story of Lali and Gita,” Shalom-Ezer said.
“The Tattooist of Auschwitz” is inspired by the real-life story of Jewish Holocaust survivors Lali and Gita Sokolov. Jonah Hauer-King portrays Lali, who arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942 and meets Gita, played by Anna Próchniak, while tattooing her prisoner number on her arm. Their love story unfolds amidst the horrors of the concentration camp, as they navigate survival under the watchful eye of a volatile Nazi SS officer, Baretzki, portrayed by Jonas Nay.
Harvey Keitel takes on the role of an older Lali, who, 60 years later, shares his story with novice writer Heather Morris, played by Melanie Lynskey. As Lali recounts his experiences to Heather, he confronts the ghosts of his past and relives the memories of finding love in the most unimaginable circumstances.
The series, a co-production between Synchronicity Films, Sky Studios, and Peacock, features a stellar cast and creative team, including executive producers Claire Mundell, Adrian Burns, Mark Young, and Serena Thompson, director Tali Shalom-Ezer, and writers Jacquelin Perske, Evan Placey, and Gabbie Asher. Renowned composers Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve provide the series’ musical score.
