A legal advocacy group has requested ITV, the British broadcaster, to verify whether contestant Jasmine Gaziza Müller should remain on the reality TV show Love Island due to her previous social media posts favoring Palestine, some of which deny the very existence of Israel and may cause offense to those backing the country.
UK Lawyers for Israel made a written request to ITV CEO Dame Carolyn McCall after carefully analyzing multiple screenshots of Müller’s public Instagram account dating back to May 2021-February 2024.
The posts include a graphic saying “EDUCATE THE YOUNGER GENERATION. TELL THEM IT’S CALLED PALESTINE NOT ISRAEL,” calling the Jewish state a “colonial project” and “the entity,” and maps of Palestine stretching throughout the territory. Another post calls Israel by an expletive and “UNLAWFUL in EVERYTHING that it does,” with another one featuring the sign “NO WAY I AM SPENDING ETERNITY IN HELL WITH THE PRO-ISRAELERS.!!”
The organization stressed it does not object to those advocating for Palestinian rights or a ceasefire, as well as criticizing the policies of the Israeli government.
“This is not about preventing legitimate advocacy for Palestinians or criticism of an Israeli government. It concerns posts that erase Israel altogether and express hostility towards people simply because they support it,” a spokesperson for the organization said. “ITV must urgently assess the implications for other contestants and for its young viewers.”
Müller, 27, hailing from Dubai, having lived in London, with an Iranian and mixed ethnic background, has been publicly supporting Palestinian rights since 2020, sharing posts such as “free Palestine,” criticizing U.S. backing of the Jewish state, images from pro-Palestinian demonstrations, as well as photographs of herself wearing the keffiyeh.
ITV forwarded the complaint to Lifted Entertainment, the producers of the show, stating that the program complies with all relevant laws and regulations, including the Ofcom Broadcasting Code.
“Ms Müller’s views, while strong and subject to debate, represent her personal exercise of freedom of speech and have been expressed independently of the program,” the producers said.
