A24 has dropped the final trailer for Y2K, the upcoming disaster comedy by director Kyle Mooney, opening in theaters on December 6. Against the backdrop of the last night of 1999, the film sends viewers on a surreal ride to a fictional world where the Y2K bug-which was once expected to create worldwide chaos when the new millennium dawned-actually brings on an all out apocalyptic doomsday.
Pitted against two high school juniors-played by Jaeden Martell and Rachel Zegler, respectively-the story follows two high school juniors who crash a New Year’s Eve party only to find themselves fighting for their lives as society unravels around them. What started off to be a night of celebration soon becomes a fight for survival when this Y2K crisis spirals out of control, taking with it a comedic yet chaotic breakdown of modern technology and social order.
This is also the first film from writer-director Kyle Mooney, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and his film Brigsby Bear. Mooney wrote the script with Evan Winter, combining his trademark absurdity with all the intensity of a doomsday scenario. Y2K is produced by Jonah Hill, who has worked closely with Mooney previously and lends his experience to comedies and disaster films.
The ensemble cast is one of the major selling points for the movie, as Martell (“It”, “Knives Out”) and Zegler (“West Side Story”, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”) take top billing. Currently starring on Broadway in “Romeo + Juliet”, Zegler has a whole spate of high-profile projects lined up including “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and Disney’s live-action “Snow White”.
It stars Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), rapper-actor The Kid Laroi in his acting debut, and veteran stars Alicia Silverstone, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Durst. The movie promises laughs, heart, and high-octane action where the Y2K disaster will be the setting and cause of the wild events.
A24, the launchpad for some of the most unique and audacious films, takes Y2K onto the big screen with just the right balance of nostalgia and lunacy in this action-comedy disaster. Anybody who enjoys Mooney’s style of comedy will want to circle their calendar for December 6, as will those who wax nostalgic over the Y2K scare of the late ’90s, as Y2K hits theaters.
