Rep. Ilhan Omar took a shot at the White House on Tuesday over how they’re handling Americans stuck in the Middle East as tensions continue to rise over the U.S. handling of Iran. She said there was no evacuation plan in place before the start of the war.
Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, was responding to a tweet from Rep. Karoline Leavitt. Leavitt said the State Department is “actively working on plans to help Americans in the Middle East return home.”
“The United States State Department is actively working on plans to help Americans in the Middle East return home,” Leavitt tweeted on Tuesday. “If you are a U.S. Citizen in the region, please register at step.state.gov.”
That link takes Americans to the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which allows them to receive safety information and be contacted during emergencies.
But Rep. Omar was not holding back on her criticism of the White House.
“You all should have had a plan in place before you started a war,” she said on X (formerly Twitter). “The only guidance Americans have gotten is find your own way home. The State Department needs to charter flights and buses for Americans and their families immediately.”
