Sarah Michelle Gellar, who famously portrayed the titular vampire slayer in the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has shared that she is now open to revisiting the beloved series’ universe. The actress made the surprising revelation while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show.

“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show. “But watching [And Just Like That…] and [Dexter: Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003, remains a cultural touchstone, blending supernatural drama with sharp humor and poignant social commentary. Gellar played Buffy Summers, a teenager chosen to battle vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. The show was an adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name and quickly grew into an iconic franchise.

Gellar previously expressed reluctance to return to the role, telling SFX Magazine in 2023 that she was satisfied with how the original series concluded. “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done,” she said at the time. “We wrapped that up.”

However, on Barrymore’s show, Gellar revealed that her perspective is evolving. She suggested that any new Buffy project wouldn’t have to be confined to a prequel or follow a predictable formula. “It could be anything,” Gellar said. “It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

Fans of the Buffy universe may be excited by the possibility of Gellar stepping back into the role, especially as the appetite for reboots and revivals of beloved franchises continues to grow.

Outside of Buffy, Gellar has kept busy with other projects. In 2023, she starred in the supernatural series Wolf Pack and is set to appear in the upcoming Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin.

While no official Buffy revival or sequel project has been announced, Gellar’s openness to returning to the character will likely spark plenty of speculation among fans.
