Selena Gomez Addresses Backlash Over ‘Lol’ Comment on Taylor Swift Knicks Post

Selena Gomez set the record straight after appearing to dismiss a friend-filled post from her closest friend, Taylor Swift, who was watching the New York Knicks game, by responding with the comment “lol” to an MTV post about it. 

The controversy began with a picture of Swift at the game courtside for MTV. 

Online, many believed Gomez, who commented “lol” on the post, was dismissing Swift, resulting in widespread criticism of her. 

In a statement shared on her Instagram Story, Gomez said she “would never insult my friends nor was it an insult” after responding to the backlash on social media. 

Gomez went on to say that the comment was made in response to the first photo in the MTV post, not to her friendship with the pop star or her attendance at the game. 

It was a friendly bet, according to the songstress, she made with a group of her friends on the game via text: “I bet my friends on the game,” Gomez said. “The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost, but was poking at my opponents, my friends.” 

She added that, despite popular belief, they are not each other’s best friends: “Believe it or not, I do have other friends in my life,” she said, “But quickly forget that most assume otherwise.” 

Gomez concluded by putting the post into perspective, saying, “also .. It’s a basketball game.”
