The craze uses AI to dress people in period clothing and add film grain for an authentic retro effect. In Whitfield’s case, the image places her at the iconic Freaknik festival, with the Atlanta skyline behind her.
However, viewers didn’t take long to post an old photograph of Whitfield that tells another story altogether. In the picture, she wears a pink sweater and teal-colored pants in an enclosed space.
Critics noted the contrast, asking how a ’94 shirt could appear in a picture set in the 80s. Others simply asked why she needed to use AI when pictures from her childhood already existed.
