Tarana Burke, Founder of the #MeToo Movement Launches New Initiative Called #WeAsOurselves

Tarana Burke, the activist behind the #MeToo hashtag, has launched a new initiative called #WeAsOurselves, aimed at centering Black survivors of sexual violence.

Ujima Community the National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community reported that one out of every five black women are rape survivors. They also reported that one out of every four black girls will be sexually abused before the age of eighteen.

Burke and actress Jurnee Smollett went on Good Morning America to discuss #MeToo’s new campaign #WeAsOurselves.

Her activism centers around bringing light to the sexual violence in Hollywood that plagues the industry. TIME’s Person of the Year in 2017, her movement has reminded SA survivors that they aren’t alone.
