Bazn Berhe, 25, was sentenced to 100 years in jail, with 30 years suspended, for the first-degree murder of his coworker Hernan Leiva, 58, in a remarkable turn of events at a Virginia Target. Berhe’s lunch was taken from the office refrigerator, resulting in a violent and brutal altercation.
Prosecutors said that Berhe, obviously upset by Leiva’s lunch theft, painstakingly planned and carried out the murder in the parking lot of the Bailey’s Crossroads Target in 2021. The motivation for such a dramatic response to a workplace quarrel has left the court system and society dealing with the gravity of the crime.
Berhe prepared his actions, purchasing a hammer and two knives just two days before the tragic incident, Fox 5 DC reported. Surprisingly, he spent the next day “training for the murder,” providing a terrifying glimpse into the level of planning involved.
The 100-year sentence, with 30 years suspended, guarantees Berhe a minimum of 70 years in prison. The Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney announced on Tuesday, according to The Washington Post, marking the conclusion of a trial that highlighted the hazards of unresolved workplace issues.
