Tash Sultana, the Australian multi-instrumentalist, producer, and engineer, released the new single “Something in the Water” and its music video on Friday. This release marks Tash Sultana’s first track since signing a global contract with BMG in 2022.

The song opens a new chapter in the career of one of Australia’s most significant musical artists. Built around a warm guitar, relaxed rhythm, and vocals that shift from velvety softness to a powerful sound, it is firmly rooted in the territory that helped the artist build their reputation, with a second part that opens up and lets the performance come forward.

“For a little while, I lost my way. I had to step back, strip everything away, and find the road home to myself,” Sultana said. “Over the past year and a half, my life has changed in ways I never could have imagined. Now, I’m turning the page and letting go of everything that no longer belongs to me: old relationships, former versions of myself, the image of who I thought I had to be, and the direction I thought my career should take. The past is the past. This is the sound of releasing it, and stepping into whatever comes next.”

In turn, the video for the new single is inspired by a numerology reading Tash Sultana received a decade ago that turned out to be surprisingly accurate. It features four cards titled The Avalanche, The Climb, The Summit, and Dominance. The video brings these four cards to life using different versions of Sultana’s personality.

“10 years ago, a numerologist gave me a prediction of my future that turned out to be eerily accurate,” Sultana said. “It stuck with me and became a pivotal point in how I understood myself and the energy around me. I lost that magic for a while when I veered off course, surrounded by people and situations I needed to separate from. To map the past, present, and future, I created four cards: The Avalanche (the past), The Climb (the present), The Summit (the next step), and Dominance (the dream). The clip brings them to life through the interplay of multiple versions of my personality.”

As Tash Sultana says, the era the artist is working on right now is intentionally human, not artificial. Everything in the era was recorded live using real instruments without any artificial production, sometimes even recorded during one single take, and sometimes after hundreds. It represents five years of the artist’s life, both personal and professional, as well as the process of distancing themselves from certain people, systems, and versions of themselves that no longer work for the artist. In the words of Tash Sultana, the current project is all about the artist reclaiming their career, identity, and even the reasons why they started creating music.

Sultana is an Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer, and entrepreneur known for their five-octave vocal range, unique self-taught approach to using the loop station, and ability to play more than twenty instruments.

From busking in Melbourne to performing on the world’s largest stages, Tash Sultana has accumulated several billion global streams, sold more than a million concert tickets worldwide, headlined some of the world’s most famous festivals, and sold out venues across the globe. Tash Sultana’s live performances are among the most-watched in the genre on YouTube, with hundreds of millions of views. A multiple award-winning, gold- and platinum-selling artist, Sultana has set attendance records at venues such as Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena and sold out Red Rocks Amphitheater in just five minutes.

“Something in the Water” is the first track from the upcoming era.
