The 2024 Golden Globes nominations have signaled a new era for the prestigious awards show, signaling a fresh start following the dissolution of the scandal-plagued Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
The Golden Globes, which were purchased by Penske Media Eldridge, will return to broadcast airwaves on Sunday, January 7th, with the ceremony airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. This updated edition will recognize outstanding achievements in film and television throughout 2023.
Leading the nominations is the film “Barbie,” which secured an impressive nine nods, including three in the Best Song category. Recognitions include Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Director for Greta Gerwig, Best Screenplay, and acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
Following closely is “Oppenheimer” with eight nominations, featuring nods for supporting actors Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr., Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and entries in Best Score, Best Screenplay, and Best Motion Picture, Drama.
The film “Poor Things” garnered seven nominations, including supporting actor mentions for Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
In the television realm, “Succession” emerged with nine nominations, dominating both drama series and various acting categories. The Best Drama Series is almost certain to be a competitive field with the series boasting nominations in multiple acting categories, including Best Supporting Male Actor, Television, and Best Actor.
In the TV Comedy category, “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Bear” earned five nominations each, including recognition for Best TV Series. Meanwhile, “Ted Lasso” secured three nominations, and “Barry” received two nods. In the Best Limited Series category, “Beef” collected three nominations.
While maintaining traditional categories, the 2024 Golden Globes introduced significant changes, such as the addition of the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category.
Additionally, a new award, the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, will recognize films with box office grosses exceeding $150 million worldwide, broadening the spectrum of eligible contenders.
