Amazon, MGM Studios, and Mattel Studios are coming together to produce a live-action version of Masters of the Universe, which will be released exclusively in U.S. theaters on June 5, 2026. Sony Pictures International Releasing will be releasing the movie in other countries with a one-week theatrical run in June.
The movie, directed by Travis Knight, stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms. The movie also stars Camila Mendes as Teela, along with Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto, who is voiced.
The movie is about Prince Adam, who has not been seen on Eternia for 15 years, returning to his homeland with the guidance of the Sword of Power, only to discover that it has been conquered by Skeletor. Prince Adam joins Teela and Man-At-Arms to rescue his family and his world, becoming He-Man in the process.
The movie was written by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham, based on a story written by Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Alex Litvak, and Michael Finch. The movie has been produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and DeVon Franklin, with Ynon Kreiz, Bill Bannerman, and David Bloomfield serving as executive producers.
This is Mattel Studios’ next big movie release after the huge success of Barbie. The Masters of the Universe franchise, originally a Mattel toy line, was created in the early 1980s and has since spawned a range of media, including cartoons, comics, and films, over more than four decades.
As a precursor to the release of Masters of the Universe, Mattel has created a “Become Eternian” digital experience on its website. This lets people take a selfie, answer a series of quick questions, and then be given a unique Eternian persona, either Hero or Villain, along with a unique name, and share their character reveal on social media. They also have a number of different, made-to-order items such as mugs and t-shirts.
