Japanese cinema maestro Michihito Fujii returns with “The Parades,” a captivating film that delves into the emotional tapestry of the afterlife. Following the success of his previous hit, “The Last 10 Years,” Fujii once again weaves a compelling narrative that transcends life and death.

The story unfolds with Minako (Masami Nagasawa), who awakens on a desolate beach in search of her son, Ryo. Encountering an eclectic group of fellow departed souls, including Akira (Kentaro Sakaguchi), Shori (Ryusei Yokohama), and Michael (Lily Franky), Minako grapples with the shocking revelation of her own demise. Together, they engage in monthly “Parades,” seeking connection with the living while confronting their unfinished business.

Yojiro Noda, renowned for his work on “Your Name,” contributes a hauntingly beautiful theme song, “Gesture of the Waves,” and a captivating soundtrack that enhances the film’s emotional depth.

Masami Nagasawa delivers a powerful performance, portraying Minako’s journey from denial to acceptance with authenticity and grace. Kentaro Sakaguchi, recipient of the Best Artist award at the 2023 Asia Artist Awards, shines as the literary enthusiast Akira, while Ryusei Yokohama brings depth to the role of the ex-yakuza, Shori.

The ensemble cast, including Shinobu Terajima, Tetsushi Tanaka, Lily Franky, and Nana Mori, elevates the film with their nuanced portrayals of characters navigating the liminal space between life and death.

Behind the scenes, director Michihito Fujii crafts a poignant narrative, skillfully exploring themes of despair, kindness, and the human connection that transcends mortality. Cinematographer Keisuke Imamura captures the ethereal beauty of the afterlife, creating a visually stunning backdrop for the characters’ emotional journeys.

With Netflix as the driving force behind the production, executive producer Kaata Sakamoto leads a stellar team, including project initiator Mitsunobu Kawamura and producers Naomi Sato, Takuya Michiue, and Ryo Yukizane from BABEL LABEL.
