TikTok Influencer Killed by Estranged Husband Weeks After Posting Chilling ‘Netflix Documentary’ Video

A Tulsa-area hairstylist and TikTok influencer was shot and killed by her estranged husband Thursday night in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide, weeks after she was granted a protective order against him.

Sara Gilson, who also went by Sara Duffey, was killed inside her Owasso home before her husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, turned the gun on himself, according to the Owasso Police Department.

Officers responded to a domestic call near East 123rd Place North and North 130th East Avenue at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday after a juvenile in the home called 911, according to reporting from Tulsa station KTUL. Officers found a man and a woman dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Sara Duffey’s son witnessed the shooting, according to KJRH-TV, and a neighbor also called 911 after the boy came to her door asking for help, according to News On 6. The child was not physically harmed.

Sara Duffey had been granted an emergency protective order against her husband last month, and police say he violated that order Thursday night, according to News On 6. Shawn Duffey had been ordered to stay 100 yards away from his wife and to move out of the couple’s home, according to court records reported by Yahoo News. Court records show she had also filed protective orders against him in 2021.

In the June protective order, Sara Duffey alleged her husband had been caught kissing a child on one of the youth basketball teams he coached, and that he threatened suicide and fled after being confronted, according to KJRH.

On the same day, the mother of a 15-year-old player on the team filed a separate protective order alleging Shawn Duffey was seen kissing and fondling her daughter and had paid the girl to stay quiet about inappropriate messages and actions, according to Yahoo News and KJRH. The allegations had not been proven in court, and Shawn Duffey had not been criminally charged in connection with them before his death.

In the weeks before her death, Sara Duffey posted a TikTok video referencing the allegations against her husband, part of a viral trend in which users describe what a Netflix documentary about their lives would cover, according to Yahoo News.

Sara Duffey worked as a hairstylist in Owasso and built a social media following where she sold clothing and jewelry, according to News On 6. She leaves behind two teenage children from a previous marriage.

Lyle Landers, the father of her children, described her in a Facebook post as “the life of the party” who loved her kids more than anything, according to News On 6. Her niece, Colbi Manry, told the station that clients remembered her as a genuine friend and a source of support.

Owasso police said there is no ongoing threat to the public, and the investigation is ongoing.
