In a recent development, prominent attorney Tony Buzbee has addressed and refuted rumors suggesting he has been barred from practicing law in New York. On February 24, 2025, Buzbee took to Instagram to clarify his standing and dispel the circulating misinformation.
Tony Buzbee’s Instagram Response
Buzbee expressed his frustration over the false reports, stating: “Over the past week, I’ve gotten multiple inquiries from friends and colleagues with concern asking why I was ‘barred’ from practicing law in New York State and offering their assistance. I myself have seen several press agencies, some borderline legitimate, reporting that same trash.” He emphasized, “Let me be clear. I’m licensed to practice law in New York. I’m in good standing with the bar and have always been.”
Certification of Good Standing
To substantiate his claims, Buzbee shared a document from the clerk of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York, dated January 29, 2025. The certification confirms that “Anthony Glenn Buzbee was duly licensed and admitted to practice as an Attorney and Counselor at Law in all the courts of this State on January 17, 2019… According to the records of this Court is currently in good standing as an Attorney and Counselor-at-Law.”
Origin of the Rumors
The rumors appear to have originated from reports suggesting that Buzbee was barred from practicing in the Southern District of New York. These reports, including one from Rolling Out, claimed that Buzbee was prohibited from practicing law in the five boroughs of New York City.
Connection to High-Profile Lawsuits
This controversy follows Buzbee’s involvement in high-profile lawsuits, notably a civil case filed in December 2024 against Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Sean “Diddy” Combs. The lawsuit alleged that both men sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl during an after-party for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Jay-Z denied the allegations, describing them as “idiotic” and “heinous,” and accused Buzbee of blackmail.
On February 14, 2025, the lawsuit was voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe, with prejudice, preventing future refiling. Jay-Z regarded the dismissal as a victory, stating, “The frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations have been dismissed.”
Buzbee’s Ongoing Legal Activities
Despite the dismissal, Buzbee continues to represent clients in related cases. He has filed multiple lawsuits against Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging various instances of sexual misconduct. These cases are part of a broader series of civil actions Buzbee is leading against Combs, who is currently facing federal charges related to coercing and abusing women.
Clarification on Legal Practice Status
It’s important to distinguish between being barred from practicing in a specific federal district court and being barred from practicing law in an entire state. While reports suggest that Buzbee may have faced restrictions in the Southern District of New York, he maintains that he is in good standing and licensed to practice law in the state of New York. This distinction underscores the importance of accurate reporting and understanding of legal jurisdictions.
In his Instagram post, Buzbee urged the public to be discerning about sensationalist headlines, stating, “Don’t believe the click bait or dramatic headlines. Most of what’s reported nowadays is pure bunk.”
As the situation develops, it serves as a reminder of the challenges legal professionals face in the public eye and the necessity for clear communication to combat misinformation.
