The justice passed away surrounded by family in Washington, DC, at the age of 87 due to complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Just days before her death, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed,” according to NPR.
In 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsburg took her judicial oath as the first Jewish woman and the second woman justice ever appointed to the Supreme Court.
