Valkyrae, a streamer, confirmed that she had been taken aback by Steve Lacy’s appearance, where the musician seemed to spoil the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the film’s Los Angeles premiere red carpet interview, and she also noted that she tried to find a way out for the artist, but she could not do it.
The conversation began with a question that was intended not to happen.
“All the characters in the film you’re aware of, and without spoiling anything, who is your favorite, or who are you most excited to see?” Valkyrae asked.
“You know what? Jean,” Lacy replied. “I like Jean.”
“Okay,” Valkyrae said.
“She’s the villain, but, like, there’s a reason to her madness,” Lacy added.
“Okay. Is that a spoiler?” Valkyrae asked.
“I like her,” Lacy said. “I like her character.”
“I love that,” Valkyrae responded.
“I like her character,” Lacy repeated. “I don’t know why.”
A few moments later, Valkyrae ended the interview.
“Thank you so much for talking with us,” she said.
“Thanks for having me,” Lacy replied.
“Easy peasy. Yeah, thank you. Have a good time tonight,” Valkyrae said. “I hope you enjoy the film.”
“Thank you. I will,” Lacy replied. “I know I will.”
Valkyrae talked about the red carpet moment on her stream, saying that her reaction was spontaneous and could not be hidden, and that she came to the premiere surprisingly well-informed about fan theories about the film.
“I know it’s not my fault. Like, when I really look at the situation, it’s kind of crazy that it happened, because I literally, okay, I did a lot of research on Spider-Man,” she said. “Yeah, I saw a lot of the theories that fans were theorizing. So the second I heard a very specific word, I, dude, my face is so funny. My reaction was insane. I couldn’t even hide it, because I knew it was not just a theory, but it was like a straight-up spoiler, straight up. I go, like, it wasn’t, it was worse than that.”
Valkyrae said that her follow-up question was intended to provide Lacy with an exit, not push him further.
“I was trying to maybe give him an out, because I knew it was like a theory. So I was like, oh, is that a spoiler? I thought he’d say, ‘Oh, just kidding, I saw the theories,’ or, ‘Oh, I guess we’ll have to find out.’ Or I thought he’d say something to, like, you know, play it off,” she explained. “And then bro doubles down on another spoiler. And I go, ‘Oh, oh, can I say wonderful day at the premiere. Enjoy the show. So thank you. Have a good one.’ I could not, I couldn’t, I couldn’t. That was crazy.”
The video became viral online, which Valkyrae said made her feel uncomfortable about the film’s future audience. She did not confirm the information to be true, saying that such episodes are hardly predictable.
“And then it goes, I felt so bad, because obviously it goes giga viral,” she said. “And, um, it’s like, oh man, it sucks for the Spider-Man fans. Like, the people that are waiting to watch the movie. Um, you know, getting what is likely to be a spoiler. I mean, there’s always, you never really know if it’s a spoiler until you watch, kind of thing. So I felt really bad for, like, the real Spider-Man fans.”
Valkyrae said that she understands the frustration directed at the episode, although she does not consider herself responsible for it.
“Um, some people were really, really upset. And I think that’s valid,” she said. “No one likes spoilers, or even the possibility of one, right? So yeah, that was crazy.”
