Why Black Celebrities Should Really Stop Caring About The Golden Globes, Oscars, and Grammys?

The Golden Globes, Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, and etc. All these award shows use our talented stars in the culture for ratings. They start off by not really acknowledging our great pieces of art by not nominating us in categories. Then they will nominate a few of us and then promote that to gain viewers. Last but not least it’s rare to see one of us win an award.

First, we can start off about the ridiculous snubs from this year Golden Globes. Ava DuVernay most impactful project, When They See Us was not nominated for any Golden Globes this year. Which is absolutely blasphemous. The limited Netflix series illustrated the story of the Central Park Five, five young BLACK men who were wrongly convicted for assaulting and raping a woman in Central Park in 1989. They were innocence and spent years fighting the convictions, hoping to be exonerated. When They See Us was released on May 31st. The show was the most watched show on Netflix until Stranger Things was released on July 4th. We are dominating mainstream with our stories and then we come to these awards and get disrespected.

Queen & Slim director Melina Matsoukas reported to Variety that no one from Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globes Voters) didn’t even bother showing up to three screening they were invited to last year. That really shows us how they really feel about our projects.

The Golden Globes will nominate the big names to promote their event. They will give Eddie Murphy and Beyonce a nomination to hype up their event. When Beyonce arrived to the Golden Globes she was mentioned in over 450,000 tweets in the first 20 minutes of arriving. She honestly should have charged them for showing up. Beyonce is bigger than the Golden Globes. If she threw an award show the same night more people would have attended her award show than the globes.

Last but not least they really only give us awards for slaves and drugs movies. These actors and directors deserve it because they did a really good job illustrating their story but at the same time it’s like they are giving us an award for knowing our place. It’s like they are saying if you want to win our awards you have to make movies like this to do so.

Our own award shows also need to do right by our celebrities. We can’t be making fun of kids hair which absolutely looks flawless now. We can’t be taking shots at talent that are literally going to perform at our award shows. We need to be more organized and professional. We are the culture and we truly shape society.
