A TikTok user who went to a clinic expecting treatment for a yeast infection says she left with a chlamydia diagnosis instead, and she is using the experience to urge her followers to get tested for sexually transmitted infections even when they feel fine.
In a video recorded in her car, the user, who posts under the handle @sharttt__, described her frustration at learning she had an infection that produced no warning signs.
“I’m gonna try to get through this video without uh stopping, I guess. Um, I am just so frustrated with this whole situation. Um, I just don’t even know what to say if anyone wants to take my advice, my advice to you is to go get tested for STDs, STIs, whatever,” she said.
She said the appointment was not originally meant to be a full screening.
“So I made an appointment today at a clinic, um, only for a yeast infection, but I decided to get a whole panel done because I was there and you know, it’s better to be safe than sorry, of course. Uh, so they tested me for everything except for genital warts and herpes, um, which I don’t think I have. I think I would know if I had, especially herpes, but um, so everything else, like gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, you name it,” she said.
She said she was not expecting the result.
“So I was sitting in the chair, you know, thinking to myself, nothing is gonna come up, you know, I’ve had no feeling or instinct or symptoms, so you know, maybe I might have a yeast infection, but you know, I think with everything else, like I’m chill, you know, oh, I’m so, so mad. The doctor comes in, and she says I have chlamydia. I’m speechless. I am so, so speechless,” she said.
Much of her frustration, she said, centered on the absence of any symptoms.
“I don’t think anyone can really understand the feelings that I feel about myself, about the situation. I mean, I could go on about how dirty and nasty and gross I feel, of course, of course I do, but I think more of my anger lies in the fact that I just didn’t know. I had no symptoms. Nothing showed up on my body. There was no signs whatsoever. Like, how was I supposed to know? How, I mean, give me one way I could have known based off of symptoms alone. I had no f****** idea,” she said.
She said the diagnosis made her think about others who may be unaware they are infected.
“And that scares me because just imagine the amount of people that are roaming around thinking nothing’s wrong with them when in all actuality, they’re infected. It just seems so unfair and criminal to me. I mean, I just don’t know what to say. Like, obviously someone gave this to me. Like I couldn’t contract this myself,” she said.
She said she had assumed an infection would announce itself.
“Um, you know, but I would think, you know, for some, I would think for an infection, I’d have more of a, like visceral reaction, like be convulsing or I’d have skin tags or, you know, high fever or whatnot, you know, but I’ve got nothing. I’ve had nothing. So I’ve had no reason to test because why would I? You know what I mean? I am so frustrated. I’m so upset, you know, bro,” she said.
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that is treatable with antibiotics. Public health agencies say the infection frequently produces no symptoms, which is why routine screening is recommended for sexually active people, particularly young women. Untreated infections can lead to complications including pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
The user said she was relieved the result was not more serious.
“You know, I thank God that it wasn’t anything worse, like HIV or AIDS or anything that’s not curable. Um, so I’m very happy. I’m very thankful that it, it wasn’t anything, um, of that nature. But I just, I feel gross. And, you know, maybe this was just an eye opener for me, you know, to take my sexual health more seriously. You know, I guess be more mindful of the people I connect with. I mean, there’s many lessons to be learned with this entire situation,” she said.
She returned repeatedly to the lack of any physical indication that something was wrong.
“But yeah, you know, I’m upset. I’m frustrated. I’m just, I’m upset that this gave me no indication that something was wrong. And I just don’t know how fair that is because that’s not fair to me and that’s not fair to the people that have also been affected by this,” she said.
She closed the video with a message to viewers.
“Um, so yeah, if you want any advice, don’t be like me and get tested after every encounter or even if you don’t think you have anything wrong. Cause that’s what I thought. And now here I am. So,” she said.
@sharttt__ this has been such a humbling experience. Maybe I am over reacting (I am trying to stay positive), but I have never received news like this in my life, I just don’t know how to view myself. This has def given me perspective and a new outlook on everything. #chlymidia #reproductivehealthcare #fyp #foryoupage
