A 35-year-old lawyer was reportedly shot and killed on Monday morning in a daylight robbery in South Africa.

Chinette Gallichan, from Krugersdorp, was gunned down around 99 a.m. in front of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration offices in Fox and Joubert streets in Johannesburg. She had arrived to attend a court case.

The police say a male suspect approached her as she stepped out of her car and shot her at close range. The suspect then fled the scene on foot before getting into a getaway vehicle. Nothing was stolen from her. The motive for the crime appears to be robbery.

Gallichan was a lawyer in Sibanye-Stillwater’s labour litigation department. She was involved in several cases relating to wage payments and unfair dismissals. On the day she was killed, she was representing retrenched workers who were seeking compensation from a mining firm.

Gallichan had graduated with a law degree from the University of South Africa and a postgraduate diploma in labour law with distinction from the University of Johannesburg.

Gallichan was also an athlete. She and her husband were part of the Run Zone Athletics Club. They took part in several running events around the country. She took part in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in 2023. She finished in 4:18:57.
