AOC Fires Back After Ted Cruz Calls Her a Parasite: “He Thinks He’s Better Than Someone Who Actually Had to Work”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., responded Tuesday to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, after the senator called her a “parasite” and disparaged her former career as a bartender.

“It’s not a secret the disdain Ted Cruz has for people who work working-class jobs,” Ocasio-Cortez told Meidas Touch reporter Pablo Manriquez. “It’s not a secret what he thinks of the waitresses, the line cooks he thinks we’re less than him.”

Ocasio-Cortez, who worked as a bartender before her 2018 election to Congress, said Cruz’s Harvard education and privileged background inform his contempt for blue-collar workers.

“He thinks that because he has a Harvard degree and has never scrubbed a table that it makes him better than someone who has actually had to work for a living,” she said.

The New York congresswoman then turned the criticism back on Cruz, pointing to his lengthy tenure in elected office.

“I think it’s funny that he’s been taking a government paycheck for 23 years but has the audacity to criticize someone who has come from a family that had to work their way up and earn their place here,” she said.

Despite the sharp remarks, Ocasio-Cortez said she was not personally offended by Cruz’s comments.

“If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels. I don’t take it personally, I’m okay with it,” she said.
