Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was shown to be supportive of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s take on the issue of detaining Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid his plan to visit the United Nations through video clips posted by video journalist Nicholas Ballasy.
“Netanyahu’s a war criminal,” Ocasio-Cortez replied when asked about the mayor’s statement. “I believe he’s wanted by the International Criminal Court. So, you know, I completely understand the mayor’s position.”
Mamdani referred to Netanyahu as a “war criminal” who is “not welcome” in New York due to an arrest warrant by the ICC regarding Gaza. Mamdani explained that New York does not have the legal jurisdiction to enforce the warrant and encouraged action from the federal government instead.
Asked to respond to Republican criticism that the mayor should be more concerned about local issues such as crime, Ocasio-Cortez stood by the administration’s achievements.
“We can walk and chew gum,” she said. “We’ve already instituted a rent freeze on rent-stabilized housing. We’re cutting red tape on small businesses. We are going after bad landlords. We’re lowering people’s prices. And we can also hold war criminals accountable.”
