AOC Says ‘Arrival’ Left Her “Sobbing” on a Plane: “It Was, Like, So Embarrassing”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tells a 2016 story about a science fiction film called Arrival that made her cry so hard on an airplane that she wore sunglasses to hide the tears from others.

During a MeidasTouch interview conducted by Pablo Manriquez, the journalist asked, “When’s the last time a piece of art, film, music, whatever made you cry?”

“Let me go with the worst time one made me cry,” she replied. “I was on an airplane when I was watching, what is that movie, the one about aliens with the linguist?”

Ocasio-Cortez referred to the film Arrival, in which Amy Adams plays a linguist tasked with communicating with aliens who came to Earth.

“With Amy Adams, I was on a plane; I was, like, literally, like, going to a rally or something like this. This was a while ago,” she said. “And I was watching ‘Arrival’ on the plane, and I had no idea that it was that emotional, and I don’t even cry like that at movies. On the plane, sobbing, dude.”

The circumstances intensified the emotions.

“I had to put sunglasses on, and then the plane, the movie ends as the plane is landing,” Ocasio-Cortez says. “So then we go, they go bing bong, like, whatever, seatbelt, like, you can unplug it. So everyone’s standing up, and I’m like, I put the sunglasses on.”

She continues, “It was, like, so embarrassing, but who among us.”

Still, she stood by her choice, describing the film as “really good, really, really good.”
