Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said television networks should not broadcast President Donald Trump’s prime-time address scheduled for Thursday, arguing the speech will contain false claims about U.S. elections.
Trump’s address, set for July 16, 2026, is expected to focus on newly declassified intelligence regarding voting machine vulnerabilities and foreign interference in the 2020 election.
In an interview with Pablo Manriquez, a reporter for MeidasTouch, Ocasio-Cortez was asked whether TV networks have an ethical obligation to air the speech, which she described as a “made-for-TV podcast about election fraud and conspiracy theories.”
“I don’t think that we should be contributing to any platforming of lies about our election,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She said news outlets that receive transcripts of the address have “an ethical obligation to not air things that undermine our election that are not rooted in evidence and fact.”
Ocasio-Cortez added that her position could depend on the actual contents of Trump’s speech.
“Of course it depends on the contents of his speech, but that’s my take on it,” she said.
