A TikTok user describes how past learning made it difficult for her to know when to stop eating. She says her house had a rule that she had to finish all the food on her plate to get permission to stand up, and her mother would physically touch her stomach to make sure.
In her video, Cattien Le says she doesn’t know how to manage her food portions because of her family meals and because her mother decides when the meal ends, not her.
“I don’t understand portion control because when I was younger the only way my mom would let me stop eating a meal if it wasn’t completely finished was by pressing on my stomach and making sure that it was as hard as humanly possible,” Le said.
This checking procedure made it impossible for her body to be responsible for that decision, and instead it was her mother who decided if her child was satiated enough.
“She would decide whether I was full,” she said.
Now, this behavior makes it very difficult for her to understand how much food she should eat.
“So now I don’t understand portion control, and I don’t know what feeling full actually is,” she said.
Moreover, Le describes an unusually high standard she holds.
“Because to me, being full means that you are on the precipice of feeling like you’re actually gonna throw up and you’re gonna be physically sick,” Le said.
@cattiiiieeen I only know how to over eat or under eat 🥲
