Ava DuVernay’s Peabody Award-winning narrative change collective ARRAY today announced the launch of the new ARRAY 101 QUEEN SUGAR Learning Companion.

Available for free at ARRAY101.org, the initiative provides educational materials based on the acclaimed OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network series QUEEN SUGAR, created by DuVernay.

Which marks the sixth learning companion from ARRAY 101, having previously released guides for SELMA WHEN THEY SEE US, SANKOFA, COLIN IN BLACK AND WHITE, and THEY’VE GOTTA HAVE US.

Throughout seven seasons, QUEEN SUGAR has delved deeply into the heart and soul of Black America through the saga of The Bordelons. From incarceration, police brutality, and gentrification to co-dependency, entrepreneurship, and sexual/gender identity, the drama series has boldly tackled narrative change with an eye toward true social impact.

In a landmark move that has changed the face of television, the series got helmed by a roster of all-women directors for every single episode on its journey to becoming the longest-running Black family drama by a Black woman creator in television history.

“QUEEN SUGAR has made an undeniable mark on the lives of its millions of viewers during its seven seasons on television through storylines reflective of the Black American experience,” said Tammy Garnes, VP of Education and Understanding at ARRAY.

“Through dynamic conversation starters and deep dives into the history of land ownership, migration of the formerly enslaved, African rituals and traditions, our ARRAY 101 learning companion strives to provide easily digestible historical context to issues still experienced by Americans today through the lens of the beloved Bordelon family.”

QUEEN SUGAR is produced for OWN by DuVernay’s ARRAY Filmworks and Harpo Films in association with Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers are Ava DuVernay, Oprah Winfrey, Paul Garnes, and Shaz Bennett.

The series is based on the book by Natalie Baszile. All previous seasons of QUEEN SUGAR are available to stream exclusively on Hulu.
