Fires have been raging in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest for three weeks. On Wednesday, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro reacted with a hypothesis that NGOs may be linked to the fires after he cut their funding. “It could be, I’m not saying it was, but it could be a criminal action from these members of NGOs to create narratives against me”, Bolsonaro said without providing evidence. Without presenting evidence, Bolsonaro said that his “sentiment” is that the perpetrators of the criminal fires have the purpose of sending the images to the outside world. We took away the money from the NGOs, 40% of it was supposed to go to the NGOs. There’s no more. So these people are missing the money. It could be, I’m not saying it was, but it could be a criminal action from these members of NGOs to create narratives against me. On Wednesday (21) President Jair Bolsonaro accused that NGOs may be behind the fires that affected the Amazon. From January to now, the (amount of) fire outbreaks grew by 83% compared to the same period of 2018, according to INPE. The largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is a vital carbon store that slows down the pace of global warming. It is also home to about three million species of plants and animals, and one million indigenous people. Conservationists have blamed Mr Bolsonaro for the Amazon’s plight, saying he has encouraged loggers and farmers. We are experiencing a time of environmental barbarism in Brazil, promoted by the Bolsonaro government. The Brazilian people, the sensitive and conscious group, must respond on behalf of future generations, the Amazon and all nature. We need to transform the social media outrage into mobilizations against Bolsonaro’s ecological barbarism. Denial of climate change, the devastation of the Amazon, attack on indigenous people. On September 20, the Global Climate Strike begins. Let’s go to the streets? The increase of 450% of heat outbreaks is directly related to the deforestation in the Amazon, which threatens the largest tropical rainforest in the world. In addition to the risks to people and animals, the fire contributes to greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil. The Amazon has been destroyed for years and we never cared. But we have come to the point so critical, the largest metropolis in Brazil felt the effects of the fires on its skin. Soon one of the most polluting cities in Brazil. The lungs of the world are dying! It’s been burning for 17 days and no one knew about such a disaster! It hurts the soul and the heart to see our nature ending and there are still people who think it’s all normal.
